Comparison Is Hard When It’s Not Apples to Apples
When searching for a drug treatment center, the cost can be overwhelming. We’re talking about thousands of dollars. Yes, thousands. No matter how hard one tries to find an affordable place, the answer is the same – drug rehab costs a significant amount of money. But, what you get for that money varies considerably, depending on the type of facility and the services received.
It is important to weigh what you get for the money very carefully, because not all treatment centers are the same. It is almost impossible to do a meaningful cost to cost comparison because the quoted cost is only one aspect of the total picture. To help you evaluate which option’s cost provides the best value, keep these factors in mind:
- The number of clients. (Bayshore has only 6 at a time). Obviously, a facility with hundreds of patients will be a different environment and have limitations that a smaller facility doesn’t have.
- The programs offered. The reality is that most drug and alcohol treatment centers have hundreds of patients and herd them in and out with a program structure that could be gotten for free! Yes, free. Most drug treatment centers use the 12 step or AA model as their program. For licensing purposes they have a licensed mental health counselor on staff and perhaps other professionals, but the amount of time spent with these professionals is minimal, while the rest of the time is spent in group sessions, with the 12 step model format. By comparison, Bayshore takes a more individualized approach. Our mental health counselors actually spend quality time with our clients (two 1-2 hour sessions weekly). Our program is health-based as well as heavy in counseling. We incorporate different perspectives with life skills instruction by various professionals. These additional programs help our clients arm themselves with the skills to be healthy and strong in their life post-rehab. At Bayshore, one size does not fit all.
- Quality of Life. Many centers have hundreds of patients, a receptionist that monitors ingress and egress, locked doors, long corridors, small bedrooms with no TV, cafeteria style meals, and fences with barbed wire across the top.Again, Bayshore takes a different approach. At this critical time, quality of life aids in recovery. At Bayshore, we believe that happy and healthy are important aspects of maintaining a lifestyle that combats substance abuse. We are located on the water in Destin and encourage the use of the bounty of nature’s offerings in our area (deep sea fishing, kayaking, yoga, massage). Our rooms are large and include TVs. Our meals are chef prepared. It is a home, not an institution.
The cost of drug rehab is significant. It is critical to make sure that you understand what value you are getting for that investment in the health of yourself or a loved one. Asking about these issues as you compare costs can help to paint a more complete picture and help in making the best decision for your family.
