5 Important Do’s of Successful Addiction Recovery

Addiction can, and often does, destroy lives. It can affect every facet of your life, from your relationships with your family and friends, to your financial stability and sense of self. One of the most difficult things about addiction is that many people don’t realize a real problem exists until the effects of their disease are glaringly obvious.

Overcoming addiction is an incredibly difficult process, one that requires significant effort. Entering drug and alcohol treatment is an important first step in the process, but long term recovery goes much deeper than these first initial steps. There are things you can do, both early on and long term, to increase your chances of winning the battle over addiction – here are a few of the most important.

Do Break Away From Your Past

You can’t fight addiction if you continue to stay where you were when the addictive behaviors started. It isn’t easy, but it is necessary to remove toxic people from your life, especially those who played a role in your drug or alcohol use. This is also a time to review your goals and to make positive changes in your life.

Do Respect the Boundaries of Others

You may have accepted your addiction and are determined to succeed in recovery. You’re ready to make a new start, but there may be others in your life who have been hesitant to trust again because they’ve been hurt by your actions. Building healthy relationships is a key part of addiction recovery and learning how to respect the boundaries of others during the process is important.

Do Get Outside

Addiction is a lonely, dark place, and it’s easy to feel isolated and alone in fighting it. There will be times when you want to hide inside, but your chances of successful recovery are greater when you get out there and engage in the world around you. Try to take advantage of the beautiful weather and soak up some vitamin D, get a dog and walk it every day, get involved in the community, help clean up the parks, etc. – find a reason to get out there.
