Destin, Florida is located in the “panhandle” of Florida, which means it’s in northwest Florida. The 2010 census reported only 12,305 local residents but at any given time the visitors will bring the population up to 6 times that. Because of this fact, shopping is outstanding with your favorite ‘big box’ stores, outlet malls, and of course the trendy specialty shops for those unique treasures. People come for many reasons from Tennessee to Texas. Its location is an easy drive and the sheer physical beauty of the place is unmatched. Likewise, there are three convenient international airports which bring guests and visitors from all over the country. Clients have come to Bayshore Retreat to get help with addiction from as far away as Alaska and as close as “just down the street”.
Destin has it all, startling white sands, crystal aquamarine waters, abundance of sea-oats, rolling sand dunes, and complete with sand pines, palm trees and beautiful magnolias. It began as a small fishing village settled by Captain Leonard Destin in 1845. Captain Destin began the fishing industry for the area and it remains a huge part of its economy today, plus the cost of living is less that most parts of south Florida.
Destin is also known as the “world’s luckiest fishing village” and is the home to Florida’s largest fishing fleet. Deep sea bottom fishing is excellent year round here, while inshore trolling runs from March through November. Charter boats are available for half-day, all day and overnight trips. And if you have your heart set on catching the really big one, offshore trolling for billfish is also available through charters out of Destin.
During client’s stay at Bayshore they experience first hand the thrill of catching the ‘good ones’, Red Snapper, Grouper, and the like… depending on the season. Likewise, they may go sailing, horse back riding, any of the other many sites in the area, or perhaps yoga on the beach.
Golf is another main attraction for visitors to Destin. The mild to moderate climate means that golf can be enjoyed year round and the world-renowned courses in the panhandle area make it a golfer’s paradise. Even on the hottest days the Gulf breeze makes it a joy to be out on one of the pristine courses.
While there are hundreds of drug and alcohol treatment centers throughout Florida, none have the beauty and peacefulness that you will find at Bayshore Retreat. Clients at our Destin recovery center reside in a beautiful home and feel the Gulf breeze from the Choctawhatchee Bay… and minutes by kayak to the popular Crab Island or 2 miles from the sugar white beaches. On any given weekend you’ll see hundreds of water craft positioned on ‘Crab Island’, which isn’t an island at all. It’s a very shallow area near the Okaloosa Island bridge where locals and visitors congregate to enjoy the sun and emerald water that surrounds Destin, Florida.
Getting to Bayshore Retreat and Destin is easy… interstate from north, east and west makes driving a breeze. Plus there’s a local airport for commuter planes and three commercial airports. The closest is in Ft. Walton Beach/Valpariso (VPS) as well as Pensacola to the west (PNS) and Panama City Beach (ECP) to the east. We help with arrangement and pick our clients up at either.
Truly along the Gulf coast Destin, Florida is one of the best kept secrets in the south. Its location provides the beauty of Summer and chilling weather of Winter. We call it ‘sweater weather’ and as we like to say, “if you don’t like the weather here, wait a few minutes – it’ll change”.
