Prescription Drug Addiction

Prescription Drugs Are More Deadly Than Car Accidents, Guns, and Suicide.

Imagine the number today, when in 2014 more than 100 people died each day in the U.S. because of prescription drugs. Painkiller addiction is a well-known celebrity health hazard,  with the likes of Winona Ryder, Jamie Lee Curtis, Mathew Perry, and dozens more attributing to their downward spiral to dependence on drugs including OxyContin, oxycodone and Vicodin. I and my husband recently experienced this possibility with visits for a shoulder fracture and dental extraction. In each case, one of the above was prescribed. Due to our fear of addiction and knowledge of clients who have been to Bayshore Retreat with addiction to these, we didn’t have the prescriptions filled. Instead we chose to use over the counter pain management. This experience with the prescription showed me how easy it is to get them.

Problem: Once that first set of medication has been prescribed, though, patient’s tolerance and resistance to it grows, and they begin to ask for increasing amounts of pills. Without anyone necessarily realizing, it begins a downward spiral with horrible consequences. Many people trust their medical professional to anticipate pain need and prescribe accordingly, therefore they go blindly into the addiction world. So at the end of the day whose fault is the prescription epidemic? Many people who come to Bayshore Retreat for drug addiction treatment are those who started with an accident that could have been managed with less than prescribed. Many drug treatment centers treat everyone the same – “an addict is an addict”- at Bayshore Retreat we try to get to the reasons for the addiction, therefore removing the guilt. This can make a difference.

At Bayshore Retreat we have extensive knowledge in treating substance abuse and co-occurring mental health issues. We understand that Mental Health Disorders can be the root cause of substance abuse. We use the latest scientific research and holistic approach for drug and alcohol addiction treatment.
